When I was living in Toronto as a student, the idea was to make sure my meals were quick and dirty to make and that the ingredients fell within my budget. My response to the American chili was a strikingly similar version to Sarah Britton’s garlicky kale and white bean stew. If you’re a novice in the kitchen simple stews like Sarah’s are incredibly forgiving.
